Abandoned by his father and later discovered by a famous rap artist, Marshall Bruce Mathers III broke the color barrier for the rap music genre. At the start of his career, Marshall was introduced into the rap business by the famous artist, Dr.Dre. He began as a continuous competitor in rap “battles” in Detroit, Michigan, one of his many home changes. Along with becoming infatuated with the rap scene, Marshall became the first white rapper in the black music industry. Later on in his mid career, he gained the opportunity to sign with the Interscope Records label. Eminem or “Slim Shady,” was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Eminem, who raised by his mother Deborah Mathers, never had the chance to meet his father Marshall Bruce Mathers II, after he abandoned them while Eminem was still an infant. His father avoided all possible contact with him, not to mention he, his mother and sister were constantly moving between different housing projects. Growing up with his mother, Eminem publicly accused Deborah of being a drug addict, and subjecting him to physical and emotional abuse. Deborah vehemently denied all of the accusations and later filed a $10 million lawsuit against her son. The case was later settled for $25,000. Along with becoming a frequent competitor in the underground scene of Detroit rap “battles,” Eminem proved highly skilled with verbal sparring, and despite his race, became one of the most respected figures in the rap scene. During his now beginning career, Eminem recalls, “I finally found something that yeah, this kid over here, you know, he may have more chicks, he may, you know, have better clothes, but he can’t do this like me. And it’s started to feel like, maybe Marshall’s gettin’ a little respect.” Later on in 1995, Marshall began dating Kim Ann Scott whom he later married in 1999. Marshall and Kim conceived Hailie Jade Scott December 25, 1999. Hailie’s birth inspired Marshall to make it as a rapper. Starting to achieve the goals he set, Eminem released his first independent album, Infinite in 1996. The unfortunate thing being that the album failed to make profit or attention. Surprisingly, Eminem’s luck turned around as he released The Slim Shady EP in 1997. The astonishing new album was later discovered by the former producer of N.W.A, Dr. Dre. As soon as Dre contacted Eminem, he traveled to Los Angeles where Slim became runner-up in the 1997 Rap Olympics MC Battle.
