In the play, Macbeth, which took place in Scotland, the author, William Shakespeare wrote about Macbeth, a man that desired to become the king of Scotland. The main theme Macbeth is good vs evil, which is portrayed throughout the story of Macbeth through characterization, actions, and quotes. This essay will go over many examples of why good vs evil is the main theme of Macbeth. For starters, good vs evil is demonstrated through the characterization. For example, Macbeth is wicked, insane, on guard, guilty, and frightened. Macbeth being wicked and guilty is an obvious sign that Macbeth is evil. There is also Banquo, who is intelligent, suspicious, kind, and loyal. Since Banquo is kind and loyal, one can tell that Banquo is a good man. Macbeth and Banquo will eventually conflict with one another, which supports the idea of good vs evil as the main theme of Macbeth. Another demonstration of good vs evil is through the characters actions. For example, Macbeth decides to kill the king so that Macbeth can become king himself. Anyone that kills someone else for self gain is almost certainly evil. A great example of a quote demonstrating good vs evil would be “Thou hast it now: King, Cawdor, Glamis, all, as the weird women promised, and I fear thou play'dst most foully for't” (Mac. 3.1. 1-4), which is said by Banquo when Banquo suspects Macbeth doing something evil in order to get his position as king. Another quote demonstrating good vs evil is “I am settled, and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat” (Mac. 1.7. 79-80). This is said by Macbeth when he decides to kill King Duncan.
