Macbeth becomes aware of his fate for the first time by the witches. After this encounter with the three witches, Banquo warns Macbeth to not give these creatures' words much credence. However, shortly after, Ross arrives and part of their prediction has come true. And then in an aside, Macbeth ponders the power of fate saying, “if chance will have me King, why, chance may crown me,/Without my stir” (1.3.154-155). Macbeth has now realized his fate and with knowing that fate comes true realizes that he will be the King of Scotland. Once he learns that King Duncan has named Malcolm the Prince of Cumberland and heir to the crown of Scotland, Macbeth isn't content to wait around for fate to intervene. He decides that he must take action and "o'erleap, For in my way [the prince of cumberland] lies,"(1.4.4) the obstacles in his path to the throne. Macbeth catalyzes his kingship by his voluntary decision. The powers of fate then take over by having the prince of cumberland and his brother flee leaving Macbeth as king.Macbeth may be fated to be king, but he decides all on his own that he will murder Duncan in order to obtain the crown.
