18. What would you infer from the conversation between Simon and the pig head? Simon finally meets “Lord of the Flies,” a pig on the stick. The lord states that he is the beast and he is part of him. This concludes that the beast is fear of the boys within themselves. They are scared to face it and they rather ignore it, although whatever happens, they demand to kill. Their desire for killing has turned them into barbarians. Simon is the only one who is able to see it. 19. Why does Jack wear paint on his face? The paint allows him to hide his true identity of being a civilized citizen. He feels the paint gives him the power to hunt and to kill. He feels like he has transformed into a new person. 20. What do you think Piggy and Ralph deny to join the beast dance? They are trying to oppose to become savagers. They watch in terror as the boys dance in circles with their weapons, and chanting, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (pg. 218). They go from civilized citizens to wild animals. 21. At first, the boys take turns try to maintain the fire. Later on, they lost their desire of being rescued and rather be savager on the island; the fire burns low and eventually goes out. At the end of the novel, the fire attracts a ship to save them, however it is not the signal fire. It is the forest fire that Jack’s tribe set to hunt and kill Ralph.
