The Lion, The Witch, The Wardrobe, The Goblin, The Princess, and The Empowered Child In The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis tells the story of four English children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, who find themselves saving a fantasy world called Narnia from the wicked White Witch. George Macdonald’s story, Princess and The Goblin, tells a similar tale where Irene, an eight year old princess, and Curdie, a miner boy, save the entire fantastic land from the evil goblins. Macdonald and Lewis similarly portray the child characters in their books. The sets of children are required to save a larger adult civilization from malevolent forces. Eventually, all four children find themselves in Narnia, a fantasy land, stricken with snow by the evil White Witch. Narnian prophecy states that “When Adam’s flesh and Adam’s bone sits at Cair Paravel in throne, the evil will be over and done” (81). Furthermore, the prophecy requires two boys and two girls to reign as kings and queens of Narnia. For civil society to even exist in Narnia, children of earth must rule. The Narnian requirement that children for Narnia to conquer evil creates a power imbalance. In this imbalance of power, C.S Lewis ends up putting almost all the societal power in the hands of the Pevency children. The children are given the choice to either free Narnia from eternal winter, or, like Edmund almost did, hand themselves over to the White Witch, and possibly face death. The children’s empowerment allows them to choose the outcome of the story. The children choose to lend themselves to the Narnian’s cause and eventually conquer the White Witch. The choice they make subsequently empowers the Narnians to finally live freely again. It is almost as if the empowerment Lewis gives these children is translated to the entire society of
