C.S. Lewis was famous for many things his quote “you are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream” was very recognized. By looking at The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe one can see C.S Lewis included the themes of good vs. evil, compassion and forgiveness, and betrayal because of his strong Christian faith. Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland. His mother’s name was Flora August Hamilton Lewis and his father’s name was Albert J. Lewis (Bio.com). Lewis was closest to his older brother Warren Hamilton Lewis, born on June 16, 1895 (Bio.com). She and her first husband, Bill, were highly interested in Lewis’s works. But, soon after, she divorces Bill (Living and dying with Joy) She starts writing to Lewis and soon they become inseparable. She becomes Joy Lewis in 1950. But, on June 1956, Joy became very ill. On October, Joy suffered a minor fall. She noticed weakening in her legs and pain that seemed to reach up into her chest (Living 90). She received a diagnosis of bone cancer after her minor fall. On July 13, 1961 Joy passes away after being transported to the hospital. After her death Lewis tried to focus on his work. He instead wrote “Grief Observed” after Joy’s death. Lewis first came up with the idea of writing a kids book at the early age of sixteen (Shmoop.com). His first idea of starting The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe was from a strange vision of a faun carrying an armload of packages and sheltering himself with an umbrella as it walked in the snowy woods (Shmoop.com). After his meeting with the evacuee’s was what finally inspired him to start writing the book. Lucy one of the children from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is based on Lucy Barfield, Lewis’s goddaughter. She was four years old and fourteen when he finished the book. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were in a writing group called The Inklings (Mentalfloss.com). But, after reading Lewis’s writing group discouraged him from publishing his children’s book.
