Operation Ceasefire Case Study

Introduction: Operation Ceasefire was a policy originated in Boston, Massachusetts, which attempted to reduce youth homicide and gang involvement. The policy specifically targeted the youth in Boston who were involved in the gang violence and drug marketing, using problem-oriented policing and a “lever-pulling” strategy. The program administered a multi-working group to help address this problem which, consequently, involved more than just law enforcement officers working to prevent this youth violence. By involving more than just law enforcement it helped the implementation of this program, due to the distrust regarding police officers in Boston. This paper will first, evaluate the factors that lead to the creation of Operation Ceasefire, and the specifics that Ceasefire used to achieve the program. This paper will also discuss various studies that have directly examines Operation Ceasefire effectiveness, including a study that examines the reenacted version of Operation Ceasefire. During this time period the victims of homicides increased roughly by 16% in regard to juvenile victims in Boston (Braga, Hureau, & Winship, 2008). Several different professional and community groups were brought in to create a policy that would deter youth from gang related activity (Braga & Winship, 2009). These various professionals included law enforcement officers-specifically from the Boston Police Department (BPD)- researchers, and juvenile services (Braga & Winship, 2009).
