Joseph Conrad was born on December 3, 1857 in Poland as Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski. Conrad's parents were apart of the Polish elite. Conrad's parents were also rebels who were refractory towards authoritative Russian control and were sent to exile. While a growing adolescence, Conrad's parents died of consumption; Conrad was raised by his uncle in Poland. Conrad was given the opportunity to sail on several French merchant ships traveling to the Americans. After failing to commit suicide, Conrad joined a British merchant marine and became a British citizen. Conrad began writing in 1895 when he published his freshman novel, Almayer's Folly.
