Ivan IV Vasilyevich, widely known as Ivan the Terrible, was the Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 to 1547 and Tsar (in other words emperor) of All the Russias from 1547 until the day of his death in 1584. Ivan was given the name Ivan the Terrible after his time serving the throne because of all the horrible things he did while being in the throne, some of this things include torturing and executing nobles and clergy indistinguishable without trial if he thought they were against him. Ivan was not always terrible, he had a rough childhood by losing both of his parents at a young age, he also went through several marriages in which some of his partners passed away, as well as Ivan accidently killing his son. He was the first born child of Vasily III of Russia and Elena Glinskaya making him the heir of the Russian throne. 2 years later his younger brother Yuri Vasilyevich was born, due to him being deaf mute he was never considered to take over the Russian throne. Only a year after Ivan’s younger was born his father dies of blood poising due to a boil in his leg that was poorly treated. On his deathbed Vasily passed down his powers to the throne to his wife Elena until his oldest son Ivan was mature enough to rule their people. This caused Ivan to be proclaimed as the Grand Prince of Moscow as his father’s dying wish, because of Ivan’s young age his mother acted as regent (one who reigns). Elena later died of what historians believed to be assassination by poison when Ivan was just 8 years old. This left Ivan and his younger brother Yuri to only have each other as family. At the age of 16 Ivan was crowned with Monomakh's Cap (crown of the Russian autocracy) at the Cathedral of the Dormition on January 16th 1547. He was the first person to be crowned as "Tsar of All the Russias". After being crowned Ivan wanted to send a message not only to his people of Russia but to the world
