In the story “The Pedestrian” written by Ray Bradbury, he uses characterization and symbolism in a futuristic society to show the loss of individualism by overuse of controlled technology. Leonard expresses how walking through the city was “... not unequal to walking through a graveyard… (and) sudden grey phantoms seemed to manifest upon inner room walls…” (Bradbury 1). Through phrases like “walking through a graveyard” and “sudden grey phantoms”, the author expresses how the people of this society are “dead” because they have lost all free will.
