Hurricane Joaquin is a category 1 hurricane that’s picking up speed. It is expected to hit the Bahamas, but meteorologists are unsure of the path it will take. It could turn west and hit North Carolina, turn east and spin out to sea, or continue on a straight path. The hurricane was named Joaquin by the World Meteorological Organization. In 1950 the US Weather Bureau said they would start naming the hurricane using the military alphabet from World War II. Before this, the military would give hurricanes random names. All storms from the Atlantic Ocean are named with English, Spanish,or French names. Male and female names for the storms were alternated between starting in 1979. Every six years, the names on the list are reused unless the storms
