I enjoyed week eleven assignments. “Life in the Iron Mills” is an interesting story about Rebecca Harding. It is about the people who were living in poverty during 19th century. Davis explain the different between upper and lower class of lifestyles. She tells the story about a reliable worker whose name is Hugh Wolfe. He works at the Iron mill and how people were treated during that period of time. “The mass of men lead lives of quit desperation” is Thoreau’s Walden famous quote. I think “quit desperation” is about the feeling and also about the bad faith. Most of the men were afraid working as a slaves in the mills. People were treated so badly that they could not eat properly and were forced to work in the field even though they were sick. The quote “Wolfe listened more and more like a dumb, hopeless animal,with a duller,more stolid look creeping over his face, glancing now and then back to himself, seeing as in a mirror his filthy body, his more stained soul.” ( The Norton Anthology of American Literature, 1715). A life at iron mill for Hugh Wolfe working for years his mind, body and soul had been completed exhausted. Hugh became the slave working at the Iron mills and has been trapped there for years. He is living his miserable life. I think this is what Thoreau has to say about the most men who were living desperate life working at the Iron mills.…show more content…
I think that he would rather would like to work in the farm than working in the iron mill because it is very hard to work being millworker. Off course, he would love to live his life in the farm and live a simple life like Thoreau
