Sympathy and empathy are two different meaning that applies to the novel, To Kill a Mocking Bird. Sympathy means a feeling of pity and sorrow for someone else’s misfortune. For example, when a family member dies, people feel sympathy towards someone loss. While on the other hand, empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Using the same example from before, some people might feel empathy because they overcame this family loss at some point in their life. In To Kill a Mockingbird, sympathy isn’t rarely shown because they live in the time where a race is superior to the lower race, in this case whites beats blacks during the Great Depression. Whites can’t feel sympathy towards blacks because they don’t think they…show more content… She noticed that the fired destroyed Miss Maudie’s garden, and feel sorry that her garden was destroyed because that was Miss Maudie real home, “ There was no note of sacrifice in his voice when he added, ‘or scout’n’me, we can help you.” (Lee, pg. 98). But overall, sympathy doesn’t really applied to the book because no one felt sorry towards other than themselves. However, empathy did came up in many chapters. One of the chapter, was when Atticus taught a lesson to Scout, “– until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee, pg. 39). This is one of the quote that shows one of the character traits of Atticus which is empathic because he knows how the teacher felt. In his own way, people seem him as a disgrace because he is helping Tom Robinson which e is black in his case. He wants Scout to learn how to see that person in their point of view before judging them, such as people in Maycomb should see in Atticus point of view that he is trying to change role in society. Another example is when Atticus send Jem to apologize to Mrs. Dubose and Scout knowing that Mrs. Dubose may “murder” him. But Atticus say to Scout that one day she will thank him for what he done to Jem. This shows that Atticus wants Jem and Scout to learn his odd behavior towards this situation when they get older, and realize why he made that
