Two of the most celebrated and influential documents in American history, Thomas Paine’s Common Sense and The Declaration of Independence, shaped the course of American history. Paine’s pamphlet demanded a call to action and an address of grievances, while also instilling in the hearts and minds of people the idea that “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”. This is a concept that not only influenced the writes of the Declaration of Independence, but almost 240 years later still energizes Americans just as strongly as it did during those turbulent formative years. By 1776 many colonists started to see King George III as more than just ruler. They saw him as an overbearing tyrant.
