Railroads played a large role in the development of the United States from the industrial revolution in the North-east to the settlement of the West. The American railroad period began with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1828. Including systems with man or horse power, and tracks made of stone or wood. Wagon ways were common in Europe; systems first appeared in England in the 1820s. Tracks were built in Britain, Western Europe, and Russia. Technology of the train as improved greatly.
