Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts 1692 and is based on a real-life historical event that is now known as the Salem Witch Trials. Throughout the story, Miller introduces the reader to many themes such as paranoia, power, and deception. Miller integrates lies and deception in his story by giving the characters an incentive to do so, whether it’s to save their lives or for their own selfish desires. Deception is developed throughout the play because of self-salvation and ulterior motives that are presented in each character.
