Sherlock Holmes: An Inspiration in Television Programs Detective television programs have drastically made an impact on today's society. The way people express the love for the shows reflects on the way they dress, talk, and behave towards each other. Many of the primetime crime television programs mirror the famous 1800s literary detective Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes was a fictional character created in 1887 by the Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes conveyed legendary logical reasoning to solve any baffling case he encountered. "Doyle's Holmes appeared in 56 short stories and 4 novels," each pack with hero-like superpowers only Holmes could portray (Freydkin). Graham Moore explained, "Sherlock Holmes presented the most successful example of procedural storytelling that would come to dominate film and television and novels"(Freydkin). In BBC's Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is an modern intake of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes in 21st century London. In CBS's Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller, it’s a twist on Sherlock Holmes in New York City where Dr. Watson is a woman. In Bacstrom, starring Rain Wilson, portrays a detective in Portland who is an alcoholic and smoker but an elite in solve special cases. In the Mentalist, starring Simon Baker, is a consultant pretending to be psychic in order to find the killer of his wife and daughter.
