Penicillin spurred the medicinal revolution of antibiotics. The discovery of penicillin was a dramatic evolution of healthcare, which had a major impact on society. Prior to the introduction of penicillin, effective treatment for infections was nonexistent. Illnesses such as strep throat, urinary tract infections, and some types of pneumonia are cured with help from antibiotics. Sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea are also treated with penicillin. Even minor wounds could have became major before the discovery of antibiotics. Surgeons also use penicillin in their operating rooms. It is evident that this pharmaceutical has caused a great impact on society and the way illnesses are handled. Although STDs such as AIDS (acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome) continue to be incurable, others, such as syphilis and gonorrhea, are curable with penicillin. Prior to the discovery of antibiotics such as penicillin, these diseases could have been fatal, just the same as AIDS. Penicillin provided hope for seemingly hopeless cases.
