Greek works have been highly revered for centuries, especially that of Homer’s. One example of Homer’s works is the “Odyssey”, which has been a renowned epic for numerous years. The Odyssey discusses the adventures of a hero, Odysseus, who returns home after twenty arduous years. Throughout his journey, Odysseus helps us learn Greek culture and mythology, through the various Gods and Goddesses who appear. Most importantly, the Odyssey embodies important Greek values, such as honor, hospitality, respect, bravery, intelligence, and loyalty. After journeying across the sea, Odysseus landed in Phaeacia, but fell into a deep sleep. Startled by girls screaming, Odysseus woke up and appeared naked in front of these girls. Naussica, King Alcinous’ daughter, was instilled with courage by Athena and decided to help Odysseus, after seeing his utterly disgraceful state. She led him to King Alcinous’ palace, which was lavishly and ornately decorated. Odysseus met with King Alcinous and pleaded for help in order to get home. The King granted him help and ensured him that he will leave the following day. Afterwards, King Alcinous invited Odysseus to feast and directed Odysseus to sit in a high chair, forcing Lord Laodamas, King Alcinous’ son, to sit somewhere else (Homer, 12.170-200). As a result, King Alcinous honored Odysseus, a beggar, to be more important than his own son. In addition, special utensils coated in gold and silver were placed out in front of Odysseus and he washed his hand over these silverware. The maids served Odysseus with plentiful amounts of appetizers and drinks. (Homer, 12.205-215) Thus, Odysseus was considered a highly esteemed guest. He was presented with a copious amount of food and placed on the pedestal equivalent to a Lord. King Alcinous treated him like an elite figure even though Odysseus was in an unkempt manner. Both Odysseus and Telemachus encounter people during their journey, who are very kind. King Alcinous, the swineherd, and Penelope treated Odysseus with great amount of respect, although Odysseus was dressed in rags. In addition, King Nestor was very hospitable towards Telemachus. King Nestor sent his son to accompany Telemachus during his journey. In addition, those who are not kind to guests are severely punished. Cyclops brutally attacked Odysseus’ men, but was blinded for his deeds. Similarly, the suitors were rude to Odysseus and his family and this lead to a devastating slaughter to occur.
