For the last few years, many soldiers returning from combat end up being homeless. Americans need to do something about this. No one should have to go through the struggles of being homeless, especially the veterans. The ones who were once protecting the flag are now sleeping under bridges. They took their sacrifice, now it our time to take ours. It’s up to all of us to get these veterans off the street and end homelessness. When they were serving they had our backs, now we need to show them we have theirs. No one looks at someone homeless and smiles, they are all looked down too. One in every 3 homeless people you see is probably a veteran and was once protecting the nation. Some veterans aren’t going to ask for your help and will hide under bridges just because their embarrassed to be asking for help. Whenever someone goes into the military they are often eighteen and if they get discharged they come back to nothing and become homeless. The U.S Military spends tons of money on gear and safety equipment but little to no money on the ones who got released and have nothing to come back too. Most Americans don’t understand what happens when someone comes back from war, that’s the thing that needs to change. As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, and active-duty service men and service women become veterans, the statistics of underemployed and homeless vets are expected to climb (“We can do more, as a nation for our veterans”). Veteran homelessness is something that has been around for year and years. With war still going on today, it’s expected that it will still be a big deal in 10 years.
