The sun is very important to our daily life in many ways such as simple things like tell the time or to something bigger like solar energy which can improve our life. As you can see, the sun makes so many things for us so that's the reason why Greeks believe in the God of Sun. However, in Greek religion believe that Apollo is a God of sun, but in Roman religion Helios is. Sometimes people may confuse about them, but in this essay we will discuss the Roman version of Helios. Helios (or Helius) is Titan God of Sun. His Roman name is Sol which means the sun too. “He was the guardian of oaths and the god of gift of sight” (Greek titan god of the sun, 1). He is the son of Hyperion and Theia. He also has two sisters, Selene and Eos, which were the personification of the moon and the sun respectively. Helios had many wives, the first wife is his sister, Selene. He is the father of King Aeetes, Circe, Pasiphae, Phaethon, Augeas, and three daughters, Aegiale, Aegle, and Aetheria. After Zeus realized that he didn’t give any land to him, Zeus gave the island of Rhodes which is located in the southwestern coast of Asia minor to him. Helios also gave his grandsons’ names ,Camirus, Lindus, and Ialyssus to the three largest cities in island of Rhodes. There was a big statue at the entrance of the harbor called the Colossus of Rhodes and it is also in list of the seven wonders of the ancient world.but today it was collapsed after the earthquake hit this island. Zeus also added the island of Sicily to Helios (“Helios the Sun God”, 2). This island was a missile that was tossed in the battle with the Giants and had formed Sicily upon landing (“Pontikis”, 2).
