Nicholas D. Kristoff once said, “One of the great failings of the American education system (in our view) is that young people can graduate from university without any understanding of poverty at home or abroad.” With one simple sentence, this quote has such a powerful meaning. Not only does this quote originate from Half the Sky but also I feel like it could relate to everyday life. Before reading the book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, I wasn’t completely aware of all the horrific obstacles women face in other countries, specifically women of Indian decent. I felt so bad for the women that felt like there were no other options then to live in brothels or live in fright everyday. Half the Sky enlightened me to learn how the world isn’t always what we see from our perspective. The women of India came, and come every day across obstacles that cannot be overcome. These obstacles are carried out on women without their permission. There are several ways these women are mistreated. A few that remained in my mind were rape, abuse, diseases such as HIV/AIDS and guilt. Rape is something everyone is familiar with. No matter what country you go to, or what culture you are from, rape is a horrible thing that can affect just about anyone. The way rape is done and dealt with is what differs.
