Italy has an extraordinary landscape but there are a few downsides because of the weather and population. In the summer, landslides occur from loose rock near mountains and volcanoes. Flooding and flash floods are common near the coast in the winter and in the north, near the Alps, avalanches plummet perpetually, killing many people and ruining homes. Other times there are earthquakes from the Eurasian plate moving and volcanic eruptions from famous active volcanoes like Mount Etna and Stromboli. Venice, a famous tourist attraction, is subsidizing and flooding and will go underwater in a short period of time. Since the city is flooded, it gives people jobs of doing tours on boats. The runoff forms algae over time and when the algae grows, it uses all of the oxygen in the rivers, causing the wildlife in the river to die. People were also throwing waste like cans into the rivers and cities used to produce 19.1 million tons of solid waste (Nations Encyclopedia: Italy’s Environment). In forests, people are cutting down trees for building materials and space to make new houses. Miners are placing small bombs to obtain natural resources from caves. If anything goes wrong, there is a high death risk and people would have been evacuated. There was a chemical plant accident near Milan called the Seveso Disaster (Nations Encyclopedia: Italy’s Environment). It killed many people. They evacuated over 1,000 people (Nations Encyclopedia: Italy’s Environment). Italy’s government has made many laws and changed many things which have helped save the environment. Gas prices have gone up to discourage the use of cars and factories have to use less chemicals or they will be shut down. The Colosseum in Rome was built in 20 A.D. (“Italy Declares War on Austria-Hungary”). It was for entertainment where the main event was gladiator fighting and there were other small events like chariot racing. The gladiator fighting started with the slaves and other fighters. It then went on to he best two fighters who fought each other. This was for money, freedom, or fame. The Colosseum is definitely a place to visit and experience history. Another famous attraction is the Pantheon in Rome and its construction started in 118 A.D. and finished in 125 A.D. (Turis Moroma: Pantheon). It was a temple and church for every god and was made by Emperor Hadrian. Venice holds the Grand Canal, a natural waterway following a channel. It is surrounded by stores, hotels, and churches. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a structure in Pisa. It was supposed to be a bell tower until it started to lean when it was being constructed. The pope, the highest member of Rome and head of Roman Catholic Church, resides in the Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel is in Vatican City and it got its name from Pope Sixtus IV (“Musei Vaticani - Sito Ufficiale”). A famous volcano known for devastating Pompeii is in Naples.
