This documentary was very eye opening and informative about the Culture of Hip-Hop as a whole entity. In my opinion From Something to Nothing: The Art of Rap contains the most complete list/set of MCs that has ever been interviewed all in one motion picture. I wouldn’t say that this is a documentary necessarily, but its more of a series of one on one interviews conducted by Ice-T with some of hip hop's best and most respected “MCs.” The names ranged from some of the legend MC's of all time to some of the greats of rap/hip-hop genre today including producers. Old school artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Lord Jamar, and Melle Mel are just a few of the interviewees. Caz is one of the older artists from the 70s. He has simple rhymes and structure however they are packed with meaning and substance, like many old school rappers. When writing his music he says humbly that “the world has to stop.” He lets us know that lyrics is what rap is about. Being lyrical and being able to flow, and paint pictures with your lyrics is what its about. Which is what he did with the “Im that Nigga” freestyle. This freestyle was very simple but it carried a heavy meanings and revered back to his old days. He speaks for everyone when he says “Hip hop is not made from scratch, the music and the foundation of hip hop comes from records we found in our parents crates.” This statement here highlights that hip hop pays homage to jazz and funk artists like Sam Cooke and Parliament Funkadelic. However Dr. Dre is one of those producers who is well known amongst the hip hop scene. Much can be credieted to his days with the NWA. Dr. Dre hs produced for many artist such as Eminem, Xzibit, and Snoog Dogg who were all interviewed in The Art of Rap. He tries to get into the artists head and personality. There is no set foundation of producing. He states the reason for creating longevity is to vibe with the artist and elaborate with the artists. You want to let them do their thing. All he does is add to what the artist already has. He becomes one with the artist he is working with so they can both work in unison. Producing is a full time job. He lets us know by saying out of all the years in his 27 years of producing he has only spent 2 weeks out of the
