President Franklin Delano Roosevelt In the midst of the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office as the 32nd President of the United States. In his inaugural he asserted “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” with these words he began guiding the American people in the process of recapturing faith in themselves and the idea of American greatness. With this regime change he brought hope and promised relief, recovery, and reform. FDR is a true inspiration to me. Life Before the Presidency Born in 1882, Roosevelt attended Harvard University and Columbia Law School. Before becoming President, FDR was elected to the New York Senate, appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by President Wilson, Governor of New York and the Democratic Nominee for Vice President in 1920. in his first hundred days, he enacted broad programs to aid the recovery of businesses and agriculture across the nation. His plan was to relieve the unemployed,and reform, with the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Fulfilling campaign promises he pushed for the repeal of Prohibition. With Roosevelt having majorities in both houses of Congress, his administration pushed a surge of New Deal legislation. He set up the Works Progress Administration as a national relief agency, employing nearly two million. His Social Security Act promised financial security for the elderly, poor and the sick. The National Labor Relations Act secured the federal rights of worker to organize unions, be apart of collective bargaining and strikes. These programs and initiatives won him reelection in a landslide, 523 electoral votes to his opponents
