In Mary Shelley’s horror novel Frankenstein, the literary technique of frame narration is used and brings both negative and positive aspects. A negative concept of frame narration is the confusion it may cause for a reader. At times, the author does not make it clear that the narrator is changing and requires an open eye at all times. Also, confusion may occur because many events go on at the same time and each narrator has a different story to tell. However, the positives definitely outnumber the negatives.The reader is able to view all events through the perspective of several characters, enabling the viewer to hear a story that is not biased one way, because it is told from the innocent and the guilty. For example, Victor first feels guilt when finding his younger brother, William, dead. Victor narrates, “My imagination was busy in scenes of evil and despair. I considered the being whom I had cast among mankind, and endowed with the will and power to effect purposes of horror, such as the deed which he had now done, nearly in the light of my own vampire, my own spirit let loose from the grave, and forced to destroy all that was dear to me” (51). Victor, shocked, finds the location where William had died and finds his creation there. Victor has extreme guilt that he is at cause for his brother’s death. Given Victor’s point of view, the reader understands the guilt of Victor for making his creation, it is understood that Victor does not have an easy decision ahead of him. Another narrator that delivers insightful narration is the monster. Often optimistic about his surroundings, he finds himself at the lowest after discovering the sin of his acts, for example he says “When I run over the frightful catalogue of my sins, i cannot believe that i am the same creature whose thoughts were once filled with sublime and transcendent visions of the beauty and the majesty of
