I have had several traumatic experiences that I wish I could forget throughout my life. Unfortunately, we usually recall traumatic experiences more easily and accurately than other memories. Although I hate remembering the car accident that I experienced in 2015, the flashbulb memory that I have of this incident helped me tremendously throughout the legal process that followed. Flashbulb memories do not necessarily have to be traumatic. Common traumatic flashbulb memories are car accidents and shootings, but one’s wedding day or graduation could even be considered a flashbulb memory (Flashbulb). These types of memories involve heightened emotions ranging from fear to happiness. Unlike with most memories, we can usually remember where we were at the time, what we were doing, and how we felt when we recall flashbulb memories. Additionally, those who experience flashbulb memories usually remember them forever. It was Tuesday, November 24, 2015. It was the first day of my Thanksgiving break, and I was on my way to my friend’s house in Northeast Philadelphia. I was about ten minutes away from his house when a slightly intoxicated driver in front of me slammed on his brakes when the traffic light turned yellow. If someone asked me what I was doing any other day during 2015, I would probably not be able to remember. However, I remember exactly what I was doing on November 24, 2015 at 5:00 in the evening. If I was unable to answer the questions that the lawyers asked me, my side of the story would not have been very credible. In addition, the case would have been drawn-out even longer than it already was.
