Individualities of Man “Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you”― George R.R. Martin. The movie The Great Debaters, conveys this quote to its full meaning coming from a time period where individual hardships were shown with struggle. During the 1930’s during the great depression, race, power, gender, were all major factors that played roles on everyone through that time period. Key scenes in the movies as well illustrate the deeper meaning behind all these identities that the movie shows with everyone and allow to see what people are going through. Throughout the movie, race is the biggest issue that most of the characters have to go through because of the setting of the movie being in a mostly African American surrounding. During that time, it was harder for that race to be able to live and enjoy there life because they were viewed as the minorities and thought to be less than the whites and other superior races at that time. “You have to do what you have to do; to do what you want to do.” This phrase is stated throughout the entire…show more content…
Women were viewed as a separate minority having almost no rights and no say to what they want to do with there life but to only those who show the world otherwise. In the movie a female makes the debate team already stating a purpose to women and the presence of this only allows for other to witness this great accomplishment for this gender being in this time period. We see this individual set high goals for her and other women around her opening new doors for opportunities for jobs in this world. It explains how overall being in all three of the identities that greatness can still be accomplished no matter the goal set and the adversity needed to
