Death’s Impact on the Life of Guy Montag Death, the destruction or permanent end of something. Death is something every living thing experiences one way or another. Whether it’s a parent, child, idea, or even yourself, you will experience some sort of death. Fahrenheit 451 is a story of tragedy, courage, knowledge, power, and a story of death. The story of Fahrenheit 451 is shown through the eyes of Guy Montag, a man of much brawn who discovers his brains by an intellectual man named Faber. Throughout the novel we find Montag searching for the meaning of his life and the truth behind his irrational society. However, Mildred did in fact become a symbol for something much more than just Guy’s ignorant little wife. Mildred died at the end of the novel alongside the entire city from an atomic bomb. Mildred’s death symbolized more than just the end of Montag’s wife, it symbolized the death of society. Throughout the novel Mildred played as the poster child for the crazy society in which Montag lived in. Mildred was emotionless, empty, and all around ignorant, which is exactly what the entire society was in the novel. It was Mildred who in fact made Montag realize just how brainless society was and letting her go transitioned Montag from his thoughtless life to his rebellion. Mildred had died once before when she attempted suicide and her near death caused Montag to figure out that without knowledge life is miserable. Mildred’s entire life was spent watching TV and spending time with her “family” which was far from reality. Mildred was so depressed and empty inside that she ignored her husband and her actual life. Montag realized that everyone in his brainless society was exactly like Mildred and that is why he left her and decided to start a rebellion. This is why Mildred’s death meant more than just the death of Montag’s husband, she signaled the death of their relationship and the death of society
