In the book of Grendel by John Gardner, Grendel’s last words before dying were, “Poor Grendel’s had an accident... So may you all”. This seems to be intended as a curse. His words were mostly likely meant to affect mankind and the animals that gathered to watch him die. For instance, Grendel says, “Animals gather around me, enemies of old, to watch me die.”(Gardner 173) this clearly states he’s enemies with the animals therefore, whatever he has to say towards the animals wouldn’t be positive. Moreover, another quote from the book that shows grendel’s last words are meant for the animals is, “They watch on, evil, incredibly stupid, enjoying my destruction”(Grendel 174).
