Fad Diets and Their Fallacies Humans are jealous beings. We always want what we don’t have, even if it is bad for us. On a daily basis we are bound to see people who are skinnier than us. We see them in public, on TV, and online. Today’s advertisers are notorious for exemplifying a standard of beauty unattainable for the majority of the population. Despite this many people want to or feel like they are supposed to look like this. Advertisers know this and promote certain so-called “super diets”. They claim that if one eats a certain thing for a certain period of time, then one can be transformed into a skinny, perfect looking person. They hire celebrities, make constant advertisements, and use fancy and sometimes complicated language to persuade people into using their product. These tactics are highly effective because they should logical to people.…show more content…
Our society lives, works, and plays online, so we are constantly being exposed to these diets. It is no wonder that eventually the advertisers, who know exactly how to make certain people click on the advertisements, are successful and another person tries the fad diet. The companies that promote these fad diets also hire celebrities and TV personalities to push their merchandise. Dr. Mehmet Oz is one of these personalities that use TV to spread these products. He deceives his viewers by informing them that his advice is medically sound. Oz was recently questioned by a senate panel about the products he promotes, and Oz was forced to reveal that all of his miracle diets were in fact, fake. The companies don’t stop with having a doctor promote their product; they also use medical jargon in their advertisements. The use of this medical jargon makes people feel like the science and the medical communities back up the product, when in fact it is not.
