Substation Automation (SA): Substation automation systems refer to the use of data from intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) to control specific functions that directly impact the power system’s operation. Communication technologies working with a myriad of sophisticated IEDs make it possible to collect large amounts of data in real time as shown in figure 1. Processing data into practical and efficient but actionable instruction is still a challenge that needs to be addressed [5]. Substation automation operational stages can be divided into three sections, namely: Data acquisition, supervision and control. 2.3.1 Data acquisition Refers to acquiring, or collecting of data. This data is collected in the form of measured analogue current or…show more content…
Operators and engineers monitor the information remotely on computer displays and graphical wall displays or locally, at the device, on front-panel displays and laptop computers [5]. 2.3.3 Control This involves sending command messages from master-station to a remote device to operate the high voltage device. Traditional Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems rely on operators to supervise the system and initiate commands from an operator console on the master computer. Field personnel can also control devices using front-panel push buttons or a laptop computer [5, 6]. 2.4 SUBSTATION AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPMENT. This section provides a brief history of substation automation technologies development, with an emphasis on intelligent power system control and monitoring. Substation automation has evolved significantly. Since overall integration of power system management and the implementation of system reliability analysis and other analysis applications depends upon the underlying devices and applications that make up the system, the efficient and cost effective integration of these devices and applications into the enterprise is key to its reliable and profitable operation. Integration of substation data can be explained as joining a series of environments each with non-mutually exclusive sets of…show more content…
The data is usually in a row form and must be pre-processed before it is further utilized. Intelligent substation is the most important aspect of Smart Grid constructing. An essential step toward the development of an intelligent substation is to introduce digitized primary equipment’s and secondary equipment’s. Most substations in current practice are using data concentrator, also known as a gateway. The gateway is used to supply data to the control centre, and to handle commands received from the control centre. The gateway’s processing power and its advanced communications capabilities increase efficiency and reliability significantly, making decentralized automation more and more widespread. The end goal of substation data integration is to transform the electricity distribution industry by building more intelligence and more complete automation into power substations. With IEDs in current practice, it’s possible to extend new controls and automation deep into the substation’s process layer, thus allowing for real-time monitoring and management from a central or remote station [9]. According to IEC 61850, an intelligent substation is characterized by these three basic
