How do you know that what you are seeing is actually real? In Scott Westerfeld's novel, Uglies, the people who live in the city are tricked into thinking what they see is real, they believed that the operation that they received brought out their natural beauty and they had no idea what life was really like. As Shay said, "Out here, you find out that the city fools you about how things really work" (page 57).
The city gave its residents a false sense of what was real. As the residents of the city were rarely allowed out, they did not have any idea as to what the real world was like. As Tally said whilst outside the city, "After a few minutes' walking, though, the board started to grow heavy" (page 56-7). This demonstrates how the hoverboards
