The narrator, death, is introducing himself in the beginning of the novel, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, by describing how he will be seen when he is met, saying, “I will be standing over you, as genially as possible. Your soul will be in my arms” (Zusak 4). The personification used in this passage establishes death as a character in the novel, by means of descriptions that imply that death has human characteristics. It also demonstrates the idea of death in this novel as a compassionate narrator, who is enthralled by human nature. Personification allows the world inside the text to be seen through human eyes, in addition to bringing clarity to the story and developing death as a character in the novel, so that he is seen as a trustful narrator.
