Dear Germanna English Professors, The world around us is full of so many things that often help shape us into who we are. Some of these things we keep close to our hearts and never let them go. These things are a part of us. This special, person, place, or memory is something that isn't easily explained in a few words. Which is why it's much more fun to tell it as a story. Somewhere in a far off land, (maybe Scotland) there was a boy who lived with his mother and his older brother. This boy watched his brother die in an ice skating accident the day before his dear brother's 14th birthday. It's sad, I know. But from this horrific accident that boy will be inspired and go on to create one of the most notorious story book characters of all time.…show more content…
First appeared in the adult novel "The Little White Bird" in 1902, J.M. Barrie wrote numerous stories and plays about the boy who wouldn't grow up. But, the story of Peter Pan, Hook, Wendy, The Lost Boys, and all the others never really took off until Disney adapted it into a movie in 1953. Why is this important? Well, I was born in 1998 and have been completely obsessed with Peter Pan ever since I saw the original movie. This is that "thing" I hold close to my heart. This movie along with the 2003 version starring Jeremy Sumpter, taught me a very important lesson about growing up. As much as it seems like the idea of Peter Pan in general doesn't really have a moral to the story, it does. In fact, it has so many that it's hard to pick just one. One of those lessons being that growing up is indeed absolutely horrid but it's inevitable. In the 2003 version of Peter Pan, Wendy and Peter act like they're husband and wife. The Lost Boys, of course, being their children. So if Peter didn't want to grow up, why even pretend to have an adult life?
