Coming of Age “These are the pieces of my youth, the small secrets and the not so great expectations that defined my coming of age” (Tablo). Coming of age is the transition between childhood and adulthood. Scout is starting to deal with this, more than her brother Jem has to. A young girl has so many choices to make; education, appearance, family and her perspective on life choices “coming of age” effects Scout because she is just getting old enough to understand the world. In the 1930’s there are still sexist people, especially in the South. A good chunk of men still believe women should not have a good education and just be housewives. When a young women is growing up she has to decide a career; whether Scout wants to do something extraordinary with her life or just become a housewife. From what has been Described in Scout, she seems like a very independent girl who, with no doubt, will do extraordinary things with her life. A family guides and nurtures while a friend creates new memories. Most of her family, if not all, is not racist nor sexist. However some of her peers are and call her dad a “Nigger lover” (TKAM Pg 114). This is just one example why Scout should not listen to her friends after all they are just kids they do not know everything that happens in life or what they should or should not believe in at this age they just follow what their parents think. With this in mind, the sad truth is friends and usually not forever, but family is forever. An example of one of Scouts friends and brother influencing her to do stupid things is when Dale and Jem; is getting in a tire and rolling down a hill. Scout did this and ran into the Radley house.
