In “Thorn”, Robert Holdstock’s style of writing emphasizes certain details but, also, leaves out others. Simon say, “Everybody knows you’re shaping the Lord of the Wood” (Holdstock p. 467). In that same page of the story, the words “everybody knows” are repeated multiple times in one way or another. Throughout the story, that phrase is repeated many times as Thomas worries about other knowing what he is doing and why they have not stopped him. In addition, the story has many time gaps between different scenes that leaves a sense of mystery. It is written in a way that is similar to that of a play, in that it jumps from one scene to another; in each scene, Thomas is seen in a completely different situation.
