INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN BIOLOGY The cell is a small unit of life. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells are similar in a way that both contain cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance containing organelles such as ribosome and chemical called enzyme. Ribosome are protein synthesis, they are “made of RNA and protein but bacterial ribosome are smaller compared to the ribosome in the eukaryotic cell”. Both the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells have a plasma membrane that regulates the flow of substances into and out of the cell, it is partially permeable. A plant and bacterial cell both possess a vesicle which carries chemicals around and they also contain a cell wall which “keeps some substances out of the cell; stops the cell from bursting if it takes in water by osmosis and holds the cell in shape” Prokaryotic Bacteria Cell Prokaryotic cells have no membrane…show more content…
The shape of the sperm is relatively simple. It is streamlined in shape to allow it swim and swim efficiently. The sperm cell consists of three major sections; the flagellum which rotates like a propeller and cause the sperm to swim towards the female ovum. There are 23 single chromosomes in a sex cell, therefore the sperm carries only 23 single chromosomes. The mitochondria are located strategically at the middle section of the sperm. It is responsible for making energy to power the flagellum to move. On the head of the sperm is the nucleus which carries the genetic information and on the top of the head is a protein layer called acrosome which allows for recognition and enzymes that dissolve the outer layer of the ovum. The nerve cell A nerve cell with all its process is called a neuron. It is a structural and functional unit of the nervous system. A neuron has cell body called soma and two types of process called axons and
