The tabernacle was a command that God gave to Moses after He gave all the 10 commandments to the Israelites. It was part of Israelites’ worship for around 500 yrs. God himself designed carefully and gave precise details to Moses for its construction, God even showed vision to Moses of how should every single thing be built (Exod.25:40). Then what is the purpose of the tabernacle? God wanted to be close to His people, He said that the tabernacle was for Him to be able to “dwell among them” (Exod.25:8). One important thing to know is that God can’t be contained in any place in the world, nor in the heaven (1 Kings 8:27), but God want to give the Israelites a visible sign of His presence, so that they could felt secured. We can see God´s great desire for fellowship between His people. God use three ways to dwell among us. The first was His only Son Jesus Christ who became flesh to dwell among us, His body was a human tabernacle as described in John 1:14. Another way is through our body, the Holy Spirit lives inside the believers, and our body became a tent where the Holy Spirit lives (1 Cor. 6:19). The tabernacle was modeled in a heavenly pattern (Heb.8:5). More details can be found in Exodus 40. The tabernacle was divided into three parts: the outer court, the holy place, and the holy of holies. The outer court were open to all Israelites, the holy place was for the priests, and the holy of holies was only for the high priests, and they could only enter once a year on the Day of Atonement. The high priests may die if his sacrifice wasn’t accepted by the Lord. This also teaches us that all those who wants to be with Him should be holy as well (Ps.24:3-4). We also need to remember that “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”-John
