Resolved: The United States Federal Government ought to pay reparations to African Americans. We stand defending the Pro side to the resolution which says: the US government should pay reparations to African Americans. In this debate, we define the following words: slavery- Slavery refers to a condition in which individuals are owned by others, who control where they live and at what they work. To be a slave is to be owned by another person. A slave is a human being classed as property and who is forced to work for nothing. reparations- the making of amends for a wrong one has done, by paying money to or otherwise helping those who have been wronged. Michael Maeillo of Reuters said “reparations would affect 44.5 million Americans, most of whom are in a position, or could eventually be in a position, to do far more than spend.” He contended that this “stimulus” will “lead to both entrepreneurship and investment and potential direct poverty alleviation for 3.2 percent of the total population, assuming that cash-based reparations payments would be large enough to lift even the poorest recipient above the poverty line.” If reparations were given to African Americans it would boost the economy, because more people will be investing and doing things related to the economy. Also, if the US paid reparations it would decrease poverty. After effects of slavery and discrimination/segregation against African Americans did not help them to lead the best life. Many African Americans today are living in poverty; CNN Money says Black children are more likely to live in poverty in the United States than children of other races. “Of the 11 million black children living in the country, 38%, or 2 out of every 5 black children, live in poverty[, a Pew Research analysis of Census data found.]” If reparations were paid, it would help lift many people out of poverty and reduce poverty, also contributing to the US’ war on
