Cambodian Genocide Research Paper
INTRODUCTION
Genocide is a term that refers to very violent or cruel action that happens in countries, and kills people and changes the countries’ future. In general the meaning genocide is “one of the worst moral crimes a government (meaning any ruling authority, including that of a guerrilla group, a quasi state, a Soviet, a terrorist organization, or an occupation authority) can commit against its citizens or those it controls” (Rummel). A lot of countries have faced genocide and have suffered from it, and the most well-known genocide in 20th century is the Holocaust that happened in Europe during World War II, which cause a lot of people to die.…show more content… Pol Pot wanted to take control over Cambodia, and he was afraid of growth of people’s power. When Lon Nol, who governed Cambodia before Pol Pot, lost his power, Pol Pot took the power and took control over Cambodia especially the capital city, Phnom Penh. During Pol Pot reign, he got inspired by Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution, which was to make an agrarian utopia to get rid of all Western capitalistic influences in Cambodia. Sin Pol Pot wanted to make Cambodia an agrarian utopia, “Pol Pot isolated Cambodia from the world” (Kiernan). He banished all foreigners who lived in Cambodia, and anyone who refused, he killed them. Since Pol Pot has all power over the capital city, he led Khmer Rouge to force people who live in Phnom Penh to get out of the city and go to the countryside. They made people to do work hard, and the people were not given a good shelter, food, or clothes. People “got to rest for only ten minutes, twice a day” (Hem). Pol Pot did not even give them a time to rest. He always separated people because he feared if people were gathering their power together and if anyone was with each other he hit them in front of other people until they died to show examples that happens if people convenes.
