Cruelty Triumphs Compassion
“In the end, it will be ok; if it is not okay, it is not the end”. In the short stories, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Gilman and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Marquez the characters overcome the mercilessness of their fellow man. The woman- and narrator- of “The Yellow Wallpaper”, is trapped unhappily in her marriage, as women of the early 1900s were not equal to man and simply had two purposes in life: to rear mans child and know their place as a silent housewife. The man of “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, is caged up, used as a source of income for the couple, belittled as a human being for his differences, and mistreated by all in the town. In both stories we are taught of how to not treat people, although the characters in both stories have not learned much, we as the audience have. We…show more content… She had little interactions with others, she was not allowed to express herself through writing, and therefor she was stumped mentally. A persons mind can not grow with out basic things such as: friendship, family, self- esteem, confidence, achievement, respect for others, respect from others, creativity, problem solving, among many others needs that come from humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslows pyramid. None of these factors were fulfilled in her current life. The husband did not truly care for his wife, which was apparent in the way he treated her. He did not think she was a very smart woman, he thought she was depressed and its almost as if he wanted nothing to do with her. Not only did we learn that people need to be treated with dignity and respect, we learned just because somebody is different from the next, does not mean we should treat them any differently. Whether man or woman, happy or sad, dirty or clean, creature or human, we should treat all people equally which is also learned in the next
