Enzyme Peroxidase Lab Report

A substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction is called an enzyme (Freeman, 2011). The presence of an enzyme in a cell, the chemical reaction catalyzed by the enzyme occurs at an appreciable rate. Conversely, the more the concentration of a given enzyme is present in the cell, the higher the reaction rate. Most chemical reactions that make life possible depend on enzymes (Biology 1009) .There are several factors that affect the activity of these enzymes such as decreasing or increasing the temperature which affects the movement of the substances and enzymes; or changing the pH level which can affects the enzyme’s shape and reactivity. As a group, we exposed the enzyme to four different temperatures, five pH levels concentration to determine the role of the environment plays in the reaction of an enzyme. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effects of several factors on the activity of peroxidase.…show more content…
Also, the solutions that were used are10mM of H2O2, 25mM of guaiacol, 2% of Hydroxylamine, citrate-phosphate buffers at pHs 3, 5, 7, and 9, and Peroxidase 6.4 mg/L in pH 5 buffer. We first started by crushing out the potatoes with a blender to make the peroxidase as a semi-liquid mixture and poured it into a beaker. Four tubes (values in ml) were filled with the peroxidase (catalase) as well as the PH test tubes except pH 5, all with 1 cm of the
