Over the years many artists have come and gone. Some of them sang music such as country, rock and roll, and gospel. Other artists were actors and actresses that became famous movie stars. Not many people have been successful in both of these areas; however, one man was so successful in both areas that did he became a household name. Elvis Presley, known as the “king” of rock and roll, lived a life of fame and fortune because of his musical and acting talents. At 4:35 on January 8, 1935 Elvis Aron Presley was born. Elvis Presley had a twin brother that died at birth, his name was Jesse Garon Presley. Elvis’s parents were too poor to pay for his birth, they paid for it with welfare (Dannenberg 5). Elvis Presley’s parents were Vernon and Gladys Presley. Elvis’s father was a carpenter, farmer and factory worker to support his family, but he was not successful in any of these jobs. He grew up in a close- knit working class family consisting of his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who all lived close to one another (“Early childhood”). Elvis and his family (Vernon and Gladys) moved to Memphis, Tennessee to escape financial burdens (“Early childhood”). Memphis is where Elvis would attend high school. Elvis always enjoyed to sing, however he received a c in his 8th grade music class because his teacher thought he had no “aptitude for singing” (songfacts –list…”).
