When asked “what is English?” there are many different things that come to mind for everybody, the first in class free-write was to answer this question. I said that English is a way we communicate, it teaches us writing, reading, speaking, and researching skills that can be utilized in other classes, and it teaches us how to expand our creativity. ENGL 191 fits my original definition of what English is. ENGL 191 teaches writing, reading, speaking, and researching skills. It teaches us how to open our minds so we can analyze texts and understand it thoroughly. The connect module teaches writing skills like style, word choice, grammar, punctuation, and more. “Danger of a Single Story” helped me develop my writing skills. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said, “Now, I loved those American and British books I read. They stirred my imagination. They opened up new worlds for me. But the unintended consequence was that I did not know that people like me could exist in literature. So what the discovery of African writers did for me was this: It saved me from having a single story of what books are.” This speech helped improve my writing and analyzing skills because I learned to think about different perspectives and I was able to take what the author was saying and interpret what she truly meant. Writing skills are important because they are practiced everywhere. Most applications require a writing sample to be submitted. For example, applicants for college must submit academic writing samples and certain job applications ask that you provide a sample of writing because it helps define credibility.
