A dynamic character consists of change within a characters personality and attitude. The author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman from The Yellow Wallpaper and Kurt Vonnegut, author of Harrison Bergeron, demonstrated an inner change in the role of a character. The protagonist from The Yellow Wallpaper, and Bergeron, from the short story Harrison Bergeron, both portrayed characters that started out as one way with one trait of characteristic but then later a transition transpired. In The Yellow Wallpaper, the protagonist is in a position, where she is contained by her husband’s control. Likewise, Bergeron from Harrison Bergeron is tied down by the governments ruling. The protagonist is sick from being chained in and not having the independence of making her own choices. For example,” He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction” (Gilman 217). This statement is referring to the protagonist’s husband who, according to Lone Star College, is portrayed as the “patriarchy” (3). At first the protagonist from The Yellow Wallpaper did not do anything to defend herself from the lifestyle she lived in. It was not until later that she begins to act upon the reality of her husband taking all reigns of control. In one of her writing entries she states that her husband, John is coming, so she must hide her written work because John hates to have her write. Although her husband is not some kind of evil character, the point that he does not allow her to write reveals some kind of controlling problem that he has. However, the role the protagonist portrays at this time is respecting her husband due out of fear. Since she reveals to the audience that she hid her writings demonstrates that she is afraid of her husband finding out about her and what she enjoys. Since she is afraid, it points out that she has no free reign to do as she pleases. The protagonists fear also demonstrates her lack of defense that she portrayed in the beginning, unlike Bergeron who started off
