3.1 Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs
Outlaw motorcycle gangs (or OMCGs) are the most prevalent manifestations of organised crime in Australia . In 2013 it was estimated that approximately 6,000 Australians belonged to one of the 40 plus OMCGs currently operating in Australia . They refer to themselves as the ‘one percenters’, meaning that they are not part of the 99% of people who obey the law . While only approximately 60% of OMCG members have criminal records the majority of the criminal activities within the gangs are not committed as a collective unit . Instead the gangs allow the criminals within it to conspire with criminal contacts and use the gang as leverage to aid their activities . OMCGs in Australia have been linked to a number of criminal
