One of the most acclaimed romantic movies of the sixties was ‘Pillow Talk,’ in which Doris Day and Rock Hudson played the leads. Rock Hudson (Brad Allen) is a songwriter and known as a Lothario. Doris Day plays the part of Jan Morrow, an interior designer, who is saving herself for the right man. She has feelings for a man with whom she only talks on the phone and never sees in person. The situation is complicated when her billionaire client, Jonathan, invites her to a party in which Brad was also present. It becomes apparent that the man behind the telephone calls was Brad who knows Jan's real identity. Subsequently, Jonathan asks Brad to leave New York and move to his apartment in Connecticut to work on his music. Brad uses Jonathan's offer as an opportunity to abscond with Jan. However, during their stay in the Connecticut, Jan recognizes the composition of his songs. After playing his songs on the piano, she realizes that the man on the telephone used to sing these songs for her. She becomes angry, and leaves the apartment with the Jonathan, who had arrived to sabotage Brad’s plan. Brad is dismayed because although he is known as a playboy, but he has fallen in love with Jan. It was evident in the ‘Pillow Talk’ that Brad had the freedom to choose whomever he wants because of the patriarchal perspectives of the sex comedies in the sixties. ‘Down with Love’ presents an entirely different image of the sex comedies as the protagonist Barbara plays a similar role to Brad from ‘Pillow talk.' She also writes a book in the favor of living a life without committing to the male members of the society and using sex as a way to live a happy and no strings attached life. She also prefers chocolates to men. However, she falls in love with the Catcher whom she hats from the start despite his view about the men. The element of the masquerade and disguise was similar in both movies as both male protagonists disguised their personalities because of the sexual purposes. Similarly, both protagonists were exposed in the movies, and both female protagonists left them after the moment of revelation. However, the major difference between the both movies was ‘Pillow Talk’ presents an image of the male dominant society and women of that time had different perspectives about the sex. Instead, ‘Down with love’ critically satirizes the male dominance in the sex comedies as these movies present an entirely different image of the female perspectives towards the sex and relationships in the twentieth century.
