English Literary Essay Amy Olley I have always felt strongly about the discrimination of races so I decided to examine racism in Southern America between the 1930s and 1960s. The theme of my book project is: An Examination of the effects of the Jim Crow Legislation and of racism on both black and white in the books To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which is my classic, TheHelp byKathryn Stockettand The Colour Purpleby Alice Walker. Atticus does not believe in the superiority of one race and is in disagreement to the unjust society: "You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are…show more content…

However, the tone is also very serious. This is seen throughout the trial and when Atticus teaches Scout not to be prejudice, “As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it -- whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash." (Page225). The tone in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Helpis critical of society. In The Help, the three narrators are critical of Jackson’s principles and laws and they try to change the town’s values by writing Help. Aibileen also teaches Mae Mobley that having different colour skin doesn’t make someone “dirty” by telling her many stories, “Little colored girl say 'I got a nose, you got a nose.” I gives her little snout a tweak.
