Diffusion And Osmosis Lab Report

To understand Diffusion and Osmosis, the experiment tested whether the sucrose solution would travel through a membrane or if the distilled water would travel through a membrane. To do so, a dialysis tubing full of 40% sucrose solution was placed in a cup of distilled water. The experiment was observed for one hour, and the weight and the color of it was recorded every 15 minutes during the hour. The results showed that the dialysis tubing gained 5.1 grams total. This supported the hypothesis that stated the distilled water would travel through the dialysis tubing in to the sucrose solution because it traveled from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. Introduction This experiment is about diffusion and osmosis. This experiment will determine whether the sucrose solution…show more content…
Diffusion is when molecules intermingle and travel from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Osmosis occurs when molecules move from an area of low concentration to an area of higher concentration through a membrane. The only way that Osmosis is possible, is if the molecules are small enough to pass through the membrane. The independent variable in the experiment was the fact that we purposely put the dialysis tubing full of 40% sucrose solution in the distilled water to see if diffusion or osmosis would occur. The dependent variable was the weight change of the dialysis tubing because it gained weight after we put it in the distilled water. When conducting an experiment, all other variables must be kept the same throughout the investigation; they should be
